Lack of Funding Prevents England's Progression as they maintain world ranking
England re-affirm their position as the fifth best team in the world at the FIL World Lacrosse Championships, with an impressive performance against historic rivals Germany clinching a 14-9 win.
Demonstrating their quality throughout, England put in an impressive performance to leave the competition on a positive note, sending the host fans home happy by doing the double over Germany.
Not being an Olympic sport, the England team receive very little funding from UK Sport. Head Coach, Dave Elwood said: "These players pay thousands of pounds to play for their country, it's an absolute disgrace!"
Equalling a fifth place ranking in this year's World Championships, the same that was achieved at the last tournament in Ontario 2006, the reigning European champions know the lack of funding can be seen as a significant factor in their ability to break into the top three positions in the world game.
"For a sport at this level, it should be recognised by UK sport, it’s a sport that should be funded; these players should receive funding, and then we could really push for a top four finish" Elwood added.
Despite finishing in last position in the Blue Division, Germany were ecstatic to have been given the opportunity to compete with the best teams in the world.
German Head Coach, Jack Kaley, said: "For Germany playing in the Blue Division was beyond our wildest dreams - it was the best thing that has ever happened for German lacrosse. Our players were exposed to the world’s best players and I have to say we held our own on the ground ball in every game."
