USA wins Under 19 Women's World Championships
USA beat Australia in the Gold Medal Game.
The U.S. captured its fourth consecutive Federation of International Lacrosse Under-19 Women's World Championship on Saturday, coming-from-behind to win over archrivals Australia. The USA trailed 6-3 midway through the first half, but stormed back to end the tournament with a perfect 8-0 record.
USA had a positive victory over Australia in the round robin, winning 20-7, however the championship game was a different matter. Australia opened scoring, with both teams trading goals until the U.S. went up 3-2 on an unassisted tally from Mikeala Rix, who dodged through several attackers to give the Americans their lead.
Australia then went on a four-goal run, which saw the Americans trailing for the first time in tournament play. Mikeala Rix stopped the Australian run with another unassisted goal, and Kelly McPartland scored on a free position to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Half time score 7-7.
After the break the USA team’s defense switched to a high-pressure look that limited the Australian attack.Australia fought until the final whistle, but unfortunately Lowe scored to put the US into a 14-11 lead with 2 minutes to play.
