World Championships Day 2 summary
Slovakia 10 Switzerland 4
– The Slovakian team gained a W in its FIL Championship debut,
thanks to stout goaltending by former Rutgers star Greg Havalchak.
Poland 16 Bermuda 2 –
In this meeting of two teams in their FIL debut, Polska raced to a
commanding 11-0 start in a rout of the boys from the Rock. Former Duke
star Josh Covaleski led all scorers with 9g and 1a.
Austria 16 Argentina 5 –
Austria scored 12 straight before Sebastian Astrada assisted Zachary
Kahn to get Argentina on the board, recording the first-ever goal scored
by a South American team in FIL competition.
Wales 10 Netherlands 9 –
Welsh attacker Paul Simpson (2g, 4a) got the game-winner on an assist
from middie Steve McDermott (1a) in the tournament’s only one-goal win
thus far. Former North Carolina standout Grant Zimmerman had a good day
in the cage for the Dutch, recording 10 saves.
Czech
Republic 17 Italy 3 – Former Notre Dame standout Brian
Hubschmann, whose father Otakar Hubschmann defected from Czechoslovakia
in 1967 and has been influential in reviving the game in his homeland,
scored four goals and two assists in the Czechs’ rout of Italy.
Hong Kong 10 Norway 8 –
Hong Kong team rallied from a 8-6 third-quarter deficit and scored four
straight goals to close the match, recording the first closely
contested comeback win of the tournament.
Sweden 20 Mexico 2 – The
Swedes recorded a shut-out first half in their rout of Mexico. Eight
different Swedish players got on the board in their tournament opening.
New Zealand 18 France 3 –
The French struck first on a goal from attacker Nicholas Constant (1g,
1a), but the Kiwis ran away with the win. The Clayton brothers – Andrew,
Mike and Richard – combined for an impressive 10 goals.
Scotland 20 Latvia 4 –
Attacker Jordan McBride dazzled with four goals and three assists in
Scotland’s runaway win. McBride is currently a standout at Stonybrook
University in the States, where he plays with Team Canada’s Kevin
Crowley and is coached by Team USA assistant coach Rick Sowell.
Ireland 21 S Korea 3 –
The Koreans won face-offs 16-11, but couldn’t covert their
opportunities often enough to keep pace with the high-scoring Irish
team. Matt Walsh and Kevin Owens each scored five goals for Eire.
Finland 14 Denmark 2 –
Solid defense was the order of the day for the Finns, who limited the
Danes to just 8 shots on goal. Danish keeper Kristian Martin Schweitzer
finished with 14 saves.
