Timperley A
The Club provides the opportunity for lacrosse to be played by boys and
girls at junior level from school year 4 (pop lacrosse) right through
to 16 years old. A senior programme then provides an opportunity for
lacrosse to be played via teams at senior level.
Timperley Lacrosse Club was founded in 1970 when Chorlton-cum-Hardy
relocated to Timperley Cricket Club and became a section of the
Timperley Cricket, Hockey, Lawn Tennis and Lacrosse Club. The club was
made up from former Chorlton members and boys from William Hulme’s
Grammar school.
The club started with one team in the 3rd division but it was soon
promoted to the 2nd division. Following a period of active recruitment,
the club grew and has spent most of the past 20 or so years at the top
along with nearby Stockport, Cheadle, Mellor and Heaton Mersey.
1979 saw the start of the club development via coaching in the local
schools (Bowdon C of E and Bollin). This moved on and in 1983, the club
hosted the first full time US coaches from the US as Lacrosse
Development Officers (LDO). Every year since then, Timperley has hosted
a full time LDO, sometimes two. Then in 1983, Timperley started running
junior boys teams with U13 and U15 teams.
With leadership from the Lacrosse section, Timperley Club installed the
first all weather pitches in 1982. This facility gave a boost to junior
lacrosse at Timperley because of the access to floodlit, midweek
training and the fact that games could be played despite the weather.
Successes were plentiful for the club in the late eighties with the
Centurion cup and Junior and Schools Cup and in 1989 the club achieved
a junior “Grand Slam” by winning all the junior cups and six a side
events in the same season. For the past few years Timperley has been
one of the top three junior programmes in the country with regular
successes.
The club started running girls teams in the mid 1980’s and produced top
players at junior county and territorial level. The club now has a very
active girls programme and a senior team. Over the past few years both
the mens and ladies sections have achieved international success with
Timperley players in international teams.
Timperley Club has grown into a very large and active club – one of the
largest in the country – through the work of a small core of dedicated
coaches and volunteers. Within a well established lacrosse development
program, a number of local primary schools have now played lacrosse for
many years. The opening of a brand new purpose built club house in 2002
heralded a golden opportunity for the club to grow even more and along
with new astro turf pitches in 2006, establish itself as the leading
club in the country.
